The triune nature of God is a great mystery. We can grasp something of how God is One in nature and yet Three in personhood, but not a lot. We can’t put our thoughts around it – the circumference of the concept is infinite.
Then add to this another mystery. Jesus made it clear on a number of occasions that we are invited to participate in the eternal and infinite fellowship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. On one occasion Jesus said to His followers, “I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” (John 14:20) Jesus prayed to the Father about all of His followers, “… that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us…” (John 17:21)
I picture a father and mother embracing while their child watches, but then they invite the child into the embrace – a family hug. In some amazing way we can, and will so much more in the phase of our eternity with God beyond this earth-bound existence, be in the middle of the love that exists in the triune God-head! We yearn for being understood, for intimacy, for acceptance, and love. We will find full satisfaction in the embrace of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! What holy hospitality!
