Faith Is No Insurance Policy

A mother looked out the kitchen window and saw her son Johnny “playing church” with their cat. He had the cat sitting quietly while he preached to it. Later the mother heard the cat meowing loudly. She ran out and found her son baptizing the cat in a tub of water. The mother said, “Johnny, stop that! The cat is afraid of water!” Johnny looked up at her and said, “He should have thought of that before he joined my church.”
Sometimes people turn to God, thinking they’ll get on the good side of God and get His protection from things going wrong, sort of a form of health and accident insurance. It doesn’t work that way. We need to realize that before we sign up with God to be His person and live for Him.
If turning to God protected us from all harm then people would go to God in droves because of self-interest, not because they had any real interest in God or love for Him. Bad things do happen to good people and good things do happen to bad people. God lets it get all mixed up.
Does God ever answer our prayers for protection, healing, and help? Yes, sometimes, sometimes not. It’s all part of His mysterious ways. God may not always protect us from harm, but He does walk with us through it, and will ultimately have His good come from it. No, we don’t always understand His ways, and that’s where faith comes in!
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” (Psalm 23:4)
