You Have God’s Attention!

godsattentionsmallA couple of times a year we fly into Mexico City to spend time at the home we have at Refuge Ranch to be near our daughter and her family. As the plane comes in low for the landing I’m always amazed at the thousands upon thousands of homes that extend as far as the smog shrouded air allows you to see. I almost always catch myself thinking, “And God knows every person in each of those houses, even the kind of toothpaste they use.” Don’t ask me why I think of God keeping track of toothpaste tubes; it’s just how my mind works.

I remind myself that the population I see below me as the plane prepares to land is only a small fraction of the 7.5 billion people that inhabit earth. How can God know every person and care for each one?

What’s even more mind boggling is that all 7.5 billion of us inhabit a speck of dust, planet earth, that circles around a star we call the sun, one of about a hundred billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy. But we can’t stop here. Scientists now believe that there are about a hundred billion galaxies, with something like a hundred billion stars each! That’s more stars in the known universe than there are grains of sand on all the seashores on earth!

If this doesn’t make us feel small, I don’t know what will. But, we shouldn’t despair! The psalmist brings it all back down to earth, and to each one of us. Speaking of God the psalmist declared, “He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.” (Psalm 147:4-5)

If God can name a hundred billion times a hundred billion stars, then it’s a piece of cake for Him to focus individually on a mere 7.5 billion people! God is able to focus on each one of us. You and I always have His complete attention, because His understanding has no limit!

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Jesus in Matthew 10:29-31)
